How to Get Rid of Farmer’s Tan

How to Get Rid of Farmer’s Tan

Today you’re going to learn the fastest and easiest way to get rid of a farmer’s tan using France Laure Self-Tanning Mousse which can be used on both the face and body.

So my husband and business partner (yes I’m talking about Mitch) has been busy working outdoors lately fixing up our commercial building, cutting the grass and playing with the boys.

After a week or so working under the blistering rays of the sun he took on a sunburn and the classic farmer’s tan on his arms and neck.

Here's what he looked like...

Rather than wasting hours baking in the sun which definitely wouldn’t be good for the sunburned skin that had just healed up I had him apply his first ever DHA sunless tan.

Of course, he grumbled about not wanting to look like an orange peel 🤣

I think he was just worried it wouldn’t look good on him to be honest.

After some convincing and a promise that this would not happen to him with France Laure's Self-Tanning Mousse he agreed and we could finally move forward to fixing his farmer's tan.

Here's how we did it...

Step 1 Exfoliation

The first step before we applied the France Laure Self-Tanning Mousse was to take a shower and thoroughly exfoliate the skin using a sisal brush.

Step 2 Application

To apply the tanning solution we simply pump the bottle and lather massage a liberal amount of the self-tanning mousse all over the body making sure not to miss any spots.

You can wear nitrile gloves or even use a applicator mitt for this step but we just used our bare hands for this. We washed with soap immediately after applying.

Tip: Be careful not to let the soapy water run down the arms where the self-tanning mousse has been applied as this can cause streaks.

Step 3 Let Dry

France Laure’s Revolusolaire Self-Tanning Mousse dries very quickly which is really nice as some other products I have tried take a good 10 minutes to set. This product only takes a minute or two.

Before putting on any clothes, I had my husband stand and wait in the bedroom for about 10 minutes just to be safe – this may or may not have been necessary but sometimes you have to torture them a little, Bahahaha!

Within just a few hours the tan started to really show.
By about 20-21 hours later Mitch had a perfect sunless tan across his entire body.

He was quite surprised by just how well it took care of his farmer’s tan and was very happy with the overall colour of the sunless tan.

Some Tips for Applying Sunless Tanners

Exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate!

If you’re planning on using a sunless tanner preparation is key.
Thorough exfoliation is what will prevent a patchy uneven tan with streaks.
You can use either a body scrub or a sisal brush… or better yet, both!

Moisturize

On those areas with rough skin such as elbows, knees and heels you will want to apply an oil free, fragrance free moisturizer as oils and alcohols may cause the self-tanner not to function.
These areas tend to take on more pigment so applying a moisturizer first will help give an even natural tan.
You may want to skip these areas every second time you apply the self tanner – you can experiment as everyone’s skin is a little different.

Apply In a Dry and Cool Location

Sweat can make a real mess of the final result leaving streaks and patchiness so it is advisable to make sure you are in a dry and cool area.

As a side note, you can apply a little bit of baby powder around the areas that tend to perspire like armpits, back of your knees and elbows and under your boobs. Just make sure to wait at least 4 hours before washing it off.

Are DHA Self Tanning Products Safe?

DHA or dihydroxyacetone is a chemical derived from cane and beet sugar. It is used exclusively as a topical solution.

The DHA works by reacting with the amino acids in the top layer of the skin, essentially dead skin cells. It creates a browning effect.

DHA is approved by Health Canada and the FDA.

EWG’s Skin Deep classifies DHA as non-cancerous, non-toxic and safe for those with allergies. LINK >> EWG Skin Deep

Note: One caveat is that DHA should not be inhaled as it could cause asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or even cancer.

Thankfully, we are not inhaling DHA and any of the off-gases are minimal as DHA is only one small part of the formula.
